There is a lot of emphasis on being physically active today. From
my own experience of going to the gym very consistently over the past
couple of years, I thought I would share some of the ways I motivated
myself from within to go the gym. In this post, I will particularly be
talking about the philosophical motivation rather than the physical
benefits which I will talk about in another post.
Happiness is Key
This is a crucial to your success. My opinion and what I have learnt over the years is that instead of focussing on goals saying something like "I want to look like this celebrity" or something like that, it is better to try out as many physical activities as you can and do something you really love doing and would be happy doing rather than worrying too much about goals.
Don't aim to look like a celebrity
From my own personal experience I have found that if you try too hard to look just like a celebrity, you are always going to end up being unhappy and getting nowhere. OK, initially it will give you good results just like it did for me when I started working out. But eventually, you will realize that you are your own person and will never look like a celebrity no matter how hard you try. So that's when you realize that actually loving the process of weightlifting/swimming whatever you decided gives you happiness, is what makes you happy. Although you can strive to be good at something, it is usually bad to try to be perfect or try to look exactly like a celebrity.
Acceptance
The important point is that you need to be in acceptance about who you are and the more you accept yourself even if you are overweight or out of shape, the happier you will be and the better the results you will get.
So in conclusion, go try out different activities you love doing and find one that you really like or one that has you working with a group which is really fun. Once you find one that you like, it is okay to go at it with your best effort. It is okay to get pumped during your workout and put in everything you got. But do not obsess over how you look. This is by far the best way I have found to motivate myself to start a new activity. Remember, your motivation for physical activity needs to come from the inside from within your heart. That means you are passionate about something and that is how you motivate yourself from within to go to the gym!
