Health Benefits of Juicing
As a Senior Citizen it is clear that I and most of my contemporaries have health issues and our doctors and or frequent visits to the hospital for corrective surgery are keeping many of us alive. There is plenty of evidence that most of us have health problems by eating refined food with little or no nutrition remaining in the food. While we may be active and exercise in an effort to keep well, we still suffer from being overweight and/or having elevated blood pressure levels. Continuing poor choices in our diet results in an imbalance of "good" HDL to "bad" LDL fats leading to heart disease, and eating too many carbohydrates and sugar generating high levels of glucose in our blood stream resulting in the onset of diabetes.
If poor diets have caused the multitude of problems in our latter years, it follows that we should do something about changing our eating habits to stop or reverse the ravages to our health that confront us. It is proven that cooking and processing food can effect many of the nutrients that should be available to feed our bodies and in some cases bring about unhealthy outcomes that deprive our bodies of essential elements. In addition years of poor eating choices will impair our digestion and our ability to gain the most from our foods. Probably the best solution is to try juicing.
Ideally a quarter of our diet should be raw food and Mother was right in telling us to eat our vegetables. The health authorities recommend eating 6 - 8 servings each day that most of us fall well short of eating. An easier way to ensure that we get the necessary nutrients from fruit and vegetables on a daily basis is to juice the produce. Juicing is a great way to overcome poor digestion and allow the body to readily absorb nutrients from a wide variety of foods and vegetables that ideally should be organic.
The idea of juicing may not appeal to us all but the advantages of doing so are well worth the effort and once established is easy to perform. There are two types of juicers; centrifugal and auger or slow press masticating juicers. Centrifugal juicers are generally cheaper, can be very noisy because they operate up to 20,000 rpm and as a result can be messy. They generally don't last as long as the slow press juicers that operate at 80rpm, do not process the green leaf vegetables as well and produce a lower grade juice because of the higher rpm. The cold press juicer while being more expensive, produces a higher grade of juice, lasts longer, and is able to process green leafy vegetables better. One disadvantage is that the feed-chute opening for the produce is smaller that the centrifugal juicer and more often than not requires cutting of the produce into smaller pieces. In addition the design of the auger juicers and in particular twin gear augers may require some force to push the food into the screws for juicing. This is because the twin screws rotate quite slowly and rely on the screws to move the produce along the juicing train. In this case I have found that sometimes it is necessary to use force to push the food along. By first introducing softer fruits and vegetables into the feed chute followed by the harder products like carrots the process can proceed more quickly.
